What’s the classic Death by PowerPoint move? Bullet points, especially lots of’em.

But what can you do instead?

Craig Haddon, of the Remote Possibilities presenting blog, just shared an excellent post of a short but powerful YouTube video from CreativePro Week by Microsoft PowerPoint MVP Nolan Haims. Nolan’s video explains how to present information in a much more interesting and memorable way that he calls “chunking”. Anyone who creates and gives presentations will find this simple technique very useful.

In the early portion of the video, Nolan uses Morph transitions to walk you through 3 options to improve your bullet points:

  • Increase the space between points
  • Reduce the number of words in each point
  • Change bullets into callouts and images

Using any of these three techniques will help you stand out as a presenter, simply because so many people opt for just using tedious, typical bullet points.

There is also a fourth option in the video that can really make a difference and is actually quite easy to do using simple built-in PowerPoint options. “Chunk” your bullet points by replacing them with shapes!

Eliminating bullets from your slides is surprisingly simple and very effective. Try it today!

And visit Nolans’ Store page. He has a fantastic and affordable item called The Better Deck Deck – available as a deck of cards or as a downloadable PDF – that will give you “52 proven design alternatives to the dreaded bullet point layout and over 150 professionally designed examples of slides to spark your creativity and improve your next presentation.” And he’s not kidding – there are some fabulous and easy techniques here that will instantly improve your presentations!
